Course Overview

The following seminar covers how to succeed as a communicator through the art of listening, a critical component of successful interaction. Participants will explore techniques for effective listening and practice applying those techniques to improve communication, relationships, and avoid unnecessary conflict.

Objectives

  2. Identify key barriers to effective listening
  3. Utilizing tools to guide your writing
  4. Apply effective listening techniques to work and personal situations

Lesson 1: Identify fundamental components of effective listening

  • Define the qualities and benefits of listening (vs. hearing)
  • Identify components of “active” listening
  • Understand the stances of turning toward, away and against
  • Examine the levels of listening

Lesson 2: Understand barriers to effective listening

  • Understand reflection and non-verbal communication
  • Examine barriers and influences on listening (environment, relationships, purpose)
  • Awareness of assumptions and their effect on listening

Lesson 3: Apply effective listening techniques to work and personal situations

  • Engage in difficult conversations by improved listening skills
  • Demonstration and role play of challenging conversations
  • Practice listening to understand vs. listening to respond
  • Create an action plan using the tools and resources for behavioral changes
